Problems we've fixed.
One platform rebuilt. One manual report replaced. Both real.
Fixing a Fabric setup that was burning capacity.
A national facilities services provider.
The client cannot be named publicly, and the results are being confirmed with them before publication.
The situation
Every data load ran through a chain of Power BI Dataflows, one feeding the next, across more than 80 million rows. Nothing was monitored, so a failure was only noticed when a report looked wrong. There was no way to rerun a single step, so a bad load meant starting again. The assumption inside the business was that they had outgrown their F64 capacity and needed to pay for more.
What we found
The capacity wasn't the problem. The architecture was.
The setup reprocessed everything from scratch on every run, which is what was consuming the capacity. Buying more would have cost money every month and fixed nothing.
What we built
- ·Failures could be isolated instead of restarting the whole load. A layered medallion architecture: data lands exactly as it arrived, is cleaned, then shaped for reporting. If something looks wrong, you can see which layer it came from and rerun only that part.
- ·Loads stopped reprocessing 80m+ rows unnecessarily. Incremental ingestion, so each run only picks up what has changed since the last one.
- ·Reports read straight from the platform, with no scheduled copy to fail. A gold-layer star schema on Direct Lake, organised around what the business measures and what it measures it by. That is what makes a dashboard respond instantly.
- ·Changes tested before they touch live reporting. Separate development, test and production environments.
- ·No credentials sitting in code. Passwords and keys held centrally in Key Vault rather than buried inside individual reports.
The outcome
Measured results are being confirmed with the client before publication. The capacity upgrade they were about to buy was not needed.
Financial Services
Challenge
Manual Excel reporting took several hours each month and relied on a process that was difficult to maintain and prone to errors.
Solution
Replaced the manual Excel-based report with an automated Power BI dashboard, creating a more reliable and structured way to track performance.
Outcome
- ·4-5 hours saved every month on reporting
- ·Improved accuracy and consistency
- ·Clearer visibility across the business
Saved per month on reporting
